4. A Fair Trade
Even though Aiken had been looking for a cheap cabin and loved antique buildings, he didn’t feel entirely comfortable taking Howell’s offer. The professor simply could not allow the man to give away a piece of property, no matter the condition. As such, when they met up to finish the deal, Aiken decided to pay Howell whatever he could. Unfortunately, we’ll never know the exact amount. When asked about the transaction later, Aiken said that be paid Howell “$100 or $200” in cash, he can’t remember.
While it seemed like Aiken has scored quite the deal, he had no idea the condition of the cabin. As it turned out, the years of neglect and mother nature’s glory had taken an even bigger toll on the building than Aiken knew…
