In October 1962, when the United States discovered Soviet missiles in Cuba, it seemed as though the world really might end by nuclear war. For those alive at the time, like Beach and his wife Jean, it was one of the most terrifying moments in world history. Thankfully, the confrontation de-escalated, but the Cold War continued to drag on for nearly three more decades.

Then, in the ’70s, Beach helped during the Vietnam conflict. There, he continued only to see more and more violence. Finally, in the ’80s, one final historical event pushed the Beachs over the edge and forced them to make a drastic decision.
