Manny Sanguillen – Failed BBQ Joint

Manny Sanguillen, the former Pittsburgh Pirate catcher, retired back in 1980, feeling it was time to return home. Afterward, Sanguillen endured some troubles, including a failed venture and bankruptcy. At the time of the filing, Sanguillen listed debts approaching $67,500 and said that aside from property he co-owned with his wife, his assets totaled a mere $16,490.

Sanguillen, who listed himself as an unemployed professional baseball player in court papers, said he earned $296,000 from the Pirates and Cleveland Indians in 1980 and 1981 respectively. But he’s now found a new niche, running a barbecue stand at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Sanguillen is a familiar sight on most game nights, shaking hands, and signing autographs for those who remember his glory days in the ‘70s.
