If you or your children grew up in the 2000s, then you must be familiar with Glee. The show’s incredible musical numbers paired with human drama proved to be a massive hit with fans. While Glee took on modern hits for their show tunes, the covers have led to tons of iTunes downloads. In fact, Glee even beat the Beatles for most Billboard Hot 100 appearances. So, that helped the show recuperate some of its massive costs.

When in production, Glee cost around $3.2 million per episode. Most of that money went to pay for the stars’ salaries. However, Glee faced a cost that most shows did not have: lots and lots of music licensing costs. In a typical episode, anywhere from four to 12 popular songs appeared, each which needed to be licensed.
