Since telling her tale, Hauser has been invited worldwide to speak about that incredible day. One of her favorite appearances came when the one and only Ellen DeGeneres invited Hauser to talk on her television show. “They started texting me on a US phone that I hadn’t used for 16 months while on Rarotonga. I finally responded and they asked me lots of questions,” the marine biologist later recalled.
While on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Hauser made quite the claim: “We know that humpback whales have altruistic behavior. They will help their own species and other whales – sometimes at the risk of losing their own lives.” According to Hauser, whales are also much more intelligent than we give them credit for.
