In case you don’t know, once upon a time, Homo sapiens were not the only human-like species on the Earth. Instead, there were quite a few other species like us, known as “archaic humans,” who later went extinct! You’ve probably heard names like Neanderthal, Australopithecus, and others – these are archaic human species.
In 2012, more than 1,000 artifacts were removed from what is now known as Denisova Cave. While the 2012 research team did not notice the arm fragments’ importance, they made another amazing find in the Siberian cave: a brand-new species of archaic humans! The Denisovans, named after the cave they were discovered in, are the closest archaic humans to us. At least, that’s what scientists thought, until a woman named Viviane Slon took a closer look at the arm bone fragments.
