“The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by The Tokens, has endured many lives over the year. Many don’t know that “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is actually a cover of the 1939 Zulu song “Mbube.” After The Tokens took it to number one, it became one of the biggest songs of all time. Fast forward a few decades, and the Disney film The Lion King popularized the song once again, thanks to the characters Timon and Pumbaa.
The Tokens, meanwhile, continued to make music throughout the ’60s and ’70s, none of their other singles earned the game of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” They remained together until 1999, when they finally called it quits.
