“Rapper’s Delight” by Sugarhill Gang (1979)
The 1979 hit “Rapper’s Delight,” by hip-hop trio Sugarhill Gang, is much more than a one hit wonder. It’s also a historic song that changed the music industry forever. After all, it is widely considered to be the first rap song to hit number one in the United States. It ushered in a new era in music history – so it’s really no wonder the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Sadly, while “Rapper’s Delight” certainly brought rap music to the mainstream, the Sugarhill Gang failed to capitalize on the success. They never charted another hit, though they recently reunited to go on a tour in 2016. Still, it’s questionable whether it worked well or not, as they have not scheduled another tour since then.
