American businessman and billionaire Jerry Jones has been the owner of the NFL team the Dallas Cowboy since 1989. At that time, Jones shelled out $140 million – that’s $292.5 million in today’s money – for the Texas team. Soon after the purchase, Jones fired longtime coach Tom Landry, the only coach in the team’s history up to that point, replacing him with Jimmy Johnson.
Jones went on to quickly build a team that is often considered one of the best NFL franchises of the ’90s, after winning the Super Bowl XXVII in the 1992 season and the 1993 Super Bowl. Now, the 2018 NFL season was Jones’ 30th as Cowboys owner, more than the number of seasons as the combined tenures of predecessors. It also brought him a net worth of $8.6 billion!
