Sometimes athletes become famous for something other than the sport they play. Take George Best, for instance. For those who don’t know, the Irish winger spent most of his career on Manchester United in the ’50s and ’60s. In his heyday, Best was a king of the sport, making around £150,000 per year in the late ’60s – £750,000 in today’s money.
Unfortunately, according to the man himself, Best wasted more than 90% of his earnings on “women, drink, and fast cars.” As a result, Best filed for bankruptcy in 1983. “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars – the rest I just squandered,” he said sometime later. At the time of his passing, the formerly wealthy footballer had a net worth of just £184,000.
