Despite growing up in such a welcoming, loving family, Culberson could not help but feel different. After all, she was the only black child of her family, the only one who didn’t look like her adoptive parents. At times, she wished she could have known her birth parents.
However, as time went on, Culberson started to feel more and more at home with her adoptive family. But, as her feeling of belonging grew, so too did her anxiety to ever meet her birth parents. As a teen, “my friend said, ‘Where are you holding back in your life?’ I said, ‘I’m terrified to find my birth parents,'” Culberson recalled to Insider recently.
