What’s the oddest thing that’s happened at your job? Well, one dollar store employee recently needed to deal with quite an interesting shoplifter: a stray dog. That’s right! The stray pup kept trying to sneak into the store to steal his favorite toy, a stuffed, purple unicorn. You’ll never believe how this story ends…

Most stores have never seen a shoplifter like this one. The small, furry friend kept sneaking into a Dollar General in North Carolina several times. Every time, the dog tried to take the same thing. No, it wasn’t food or treats – it was a purple stuffed unicorn! Each time someone went out of the doors, the puppy would go inside. “He’d walk in, go to that unicorn and try to get it,” one storeworker explained. “He did it four or five times before they locked the door and called us to come get him. Maybe he had a stuffed animal like that in his original home. I don’t know, but he wanted that purple unicorn bad.”

As the store found themselves unable to deal with the customer themselves, they needed to call animal control. After all, the dog tried to sneak in five times. That’s right! “The store called and said they had a stray dog in the parking lot that kept coming into the store,” Joe Newburn, head of the County Animal Services Department, said. They had never had a call like this before…

Call From The Dollar Store

Even Newburn, who has worked with Duplin County Animal Services for many years, had never heard a call like this. At first, he actually thought the call was a prank! “It was so strange; one of the strangest calls I’ve ever dealt with,” Newburn said. Thankfully, the department didn’t leave the dog – now named Sisu (after the character in Raya and the Last Dragon) – hanging.

When trying to get the pup, the rescues realized Sisu wouldn’t leave without the purple unicorn. So, officer Samantha Lane pulled a ten-dollar bill out of her pocket and bought the toy. With the beloved unicorn, Sisu happily came with the officers, comforted by the company. After that, it was time for the Animal Services to do their important job…

Reunited With The Stuffed Unicorn

Even before Sisu found a forever home, the Animal Service workers needed to share his love of the unicorn with the world. The pictures instantly went viral on Facebook. “He likes to sleep on it, lay on it… He just loves his unicorn,” Lane said. As you might imagine, plenty of people wanted to adopt the canine, all the more so thanks to the cuddly, cozy photos! “This is what happens when you break into the Dollar General consistently to steal the purple unicorn… but then get Animal Control called to lock you up for your B&E and larceny,” the shelter wrote alongside the pictures.

Soon enough, the shelter posted a joyous update: Sisu had found loving parents! Now thanks to the Newburn, Lane, and the Dollar General employees, this furry customer will never wander the streets again!
