Echoes from History: Chang and Eng Bunker
As per the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, conjoined twins are a rarity, occurring in about one out of 50,000 to 60,000 births. Predominantly female and often stillborn, their occurrences are rare. Yet, the most illustrious are Chang and Eng Bunker, originally hailing from Siam, modern-day Thailand.
Their renown in the United States led to the term “Siamese Twins,” later replaced by ‘conjoined twins.’ The brothers adopted farming, married two sisters, and raised numerous children. Their lives, filled with global exhibitions, drew curious crowds from everywhere. Their journey ended in 1875 when Chang left this world, with Eng following just three hours later.
