4. A Big Decision Ahead
Holmes could not believe the numbers she saw on the screen. She checked them once, and then again. She had indeed won! However, with only 180 days to cash the prize, Holmes had some serious decisions to make. Most importantly, she had to choose whether to receive installments of the $188 million prize over 30 years or take the lump sum of $127 million, after taxes.
Holmes knew this wasn’t a decision to be taken lightly. The installment plan would mean she received more money. However, even with all the taxes paid, the lump sum still added up to quite a staggering amount. In the days immediately following, everything seemed almost too overwhelming. In the end, though, Holmes needed money urgently for her family. So, unsurprisingly, the single mother chose to take the lump sum of $127 million.
