Michael Vale portrayed Dunkin’ Donuts spokesman Fred the Baker from 1981 until 1997. What’s more, Fred was always that it was, “Time to make the doughnuts.” While his tagline was simple, Fred’s classic mustache and his uniform seemed to stick with everyone! In fact, he became so popular that when the brand decided to end his run of commercials, fans demanded Dunkin Donuts to give him a proper sendoff.
In his final Dunkin commercial, Vale officially retired from acting. Afterward, the city of Boston held a parade in his honor in 1997. Believe it or not, Vale was not the producer’s first choice to play Fred! However, he ended up portraying the character for over two decades! Unfortunately, Vale passed away back in 2005.
