40. Outsiders Are Simply “English”

Amish don’t care what country you’re from, the color of your skin, or if you’re the next in line to the throne. The Amish call anyone not a part of their society an “English” individual. This all dates back to the foundation of the Amish community.

Throughout their history, Amish have only changed their ways a handful of times. So, over the years, they kept referring to outsiders as English, no matter where they came from. What’s more, they couldn’t refer to them as Americans, because the Amish are American too, so the tradition stuck. Now, even if someone comes all the way from Zimbabwe, they’re “English” to the Amish.
