The year was 1977, five years to the week since he enjoyed his finest hour in running the Miami Dolphins into the ground in the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl victory, Duane Thomas filed for bankruptcy. Thomas and his wife, pregnant at the time, submitted the voluntary petition in federal court.

At the time, Thomas listed debts of $26,979; joint income for the couple in 1976 totaling $5,000. Unfortunately, Thomas’ car was repossessed two days after 1977’ Christmas and sold at public auction. At age 29, Thomas had vague hopes of a comeback in pro football. Believe it or not, $12,261 of his debt was to the San Diego club.
