A superhero film starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins, what could go wrong? Warner Brothers’ 2011 miss, Green Lantern, taught Hollywood bigwigs a critical financial lesson: even superhero movies can turn into box office bombs.
For those who don’t know, Lantern tells the story of Hal Jordan (Reynolds) who finds a ring that grants him fantastic superpowers. From there, it’s your standard-issue comic book movie. Still, audiences didn’t like the “noisy, overproduced, and thinly written” film. Before its release, outlets reported that Green Lantern needed to make at least $300 million to cover all of its costs. It made just under $220 million.
