The entire world grieved when 36-year-old reggae legend Bob Marley died in Miami, Florida, in 1981. The Jamaican singer’s tragic death from skin cancer ended a twenty-year career that spanned hits like “Three Little Birds” and “I Shot the Sherriff.” At the time of his untimely passing, Marley had 11 children and a net worth of $130 million.

After his passing, his wealth became the subject of many familial disputes and remains so to this day. You see, Marley never created a will, as his Rastafarian faith prevented him from recognizing his own mortality. So his 11 children were not able to inherit any of his father’s wealth. Most recently, the Marley family lost a suit to regain control of Bob’s music fromĀ Universal Music Group in 2011.
