Back in 1979, Kurtis Blow made history as the first rapper to sign a deal with a major record label. With the backing of Mercury Records, Blow launched his singing career with his first single “The Breaks.” Before long, the song became the first gold record rap song in the 1980s. Throughout his career, Blow released a total of eight albums.

Ultimately, Blow realized the spotlight just wasn’t for him. So, he left his rap career behind to pursue a religious calling. Nowadays, he’s devoted his life to the church, working as a minister in New York City – talk about a turnaround!
