For many celebrities who served, the military was their first job. But that’s not the case of Death Wish star Charles Bronson! No, born in 1921, the actor lived before many child labor laws existed, so he began working in coal mines in Pennsylvania at just ten years old. He worked there until 1943, when he enlisted in the Air Force to serve during WWII.
During the war, Bronson flew 25 missions as a part of two different air squadrons. Bronson was honorably discharged three years later, earning a Purple Heart. Afterward, he used the GI Bill to study art, which ultimately led him to act. His debut role, fittingly enough, as a military sailor in the film You’re In The Navy Now.
