The once-famous Chi-Chi’s opened its first location back in 1975. In just under two decades, they had over 210 locations nationwide! While the Mexican restaurant’s slogan was “a celebration of food,” no one celebrated the Hepatitis A outbreak at one of its sites. Sadly, the outbreak was responsible for the death of at least four people. From there, Chi-Chi’s fell on increasingly hard times.

Afterward, the company couldn’t find its way back to the top. Before long, remaining U.S. Chi-Chi’s locations sold to Outback Steakhouse, which in turn sold them off to other companies. However, Chi-Chi continues its operations through a few surviving sites in Luxembourg, Belgium, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.
