Burger Chef was a rip-off of Burger King that did not last very long. General Electric founded the chain of hamburger restaurants in Indianapolis back in the 1950s. Still, while Chef might not have been a wholly original idea, it does go down in fast food history! You see, Burger Chef was the first fast food restaurant to introduce the concept of a combo meal. Yes, it wasn’t McDonald’s!

At its peak, Burger Chef almost rivaled McDonald’s with over 1,200 locations across the country. So what happened to Burger Chef? It’s simple: in the long run, they lost the battle against McDonald’s. The fast food chain ended up over expanding, which led to a decline in quality. Eventually, General Electric sold off the chain to General Foods, who in turn sold the locations to Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr. The final Burger Chef closed in 1996.
