Cities People Are Leaving

Alabama News Center

Over the past decade, the city of Mobile in Alabama has become one of the fastest shrinking cities in America. As of last year, about 1,325 people have left the city in hopes of finding a new home somewhere else. In fact, the population decline has sat at 0.7% a year for some time, one of the worst in all of the United States.

“The population in Mobile hasn’t grown in over 50 years,” Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said during her 2017 state of the city address. “For years, the city had been losing the race, lagging behind our peer cities despite the fact that we had the talent to win. The city’s cheering section, which is its citizens, had grown quiet.” While Stimpson had attempted to drive up civil engagement, it appears that Mobile still has a long way to go.
