Thanks to all the information we’ve discovered inside Denny’s DNA, we have a better understanding than ever of how she and others during her time lived. It seems they had what is now called the “high-altitude” or “super-athlete” gene, which would have allowed them to perform very well in a low-oxygen environment. As such, that explains how they survived in the Serbian mountains!
“This is the first time a version of a gene acquired from interbreeding with another type of human has been shown to help modern humans adapt to their environment,” Cosmos Magazine wrote. While we know a lot about Neanderthals and Denisovans thanks to Denny, scientists are still not sure what happened to the Denisovans – or if they even disappeared at all!
