Today, there are still many gaps in our understanding of how Homo sapiens came to be. Sadly, some information will never be known. “Much of what we know so far is based either on the results of ancient DNA analysis, or on observations of the shape and the physical structure of fossils,” archeologist Enrico Cappellini of the University of Copenhagen explained.
And even the bones in the ground are slowly losing their clues, due to the degradation of DNA over time. “Because of the chemical degradation of DNA over time, the oldest human DNA retrieved so far is dated at no more than approximately 400,000 years,” Cappellini continued.
