Today, many of the branches of the tree that led to Homo sapiens are long gone. In fact, our closest living relatives today are the chimpanzees. It’s true! However, we didn’t descend from them, like many wrongly believe. Instead, the line that led to chimps and the line that led to humans branched out separately roughly 7 million years ago. So they’re more like distant, distant cousins.
