Most historians date the earliest rumors of buried treasure on Oak Island back to 1799. That’s right! In the summer of that year, three teenage boys, Anthony Vaughn, John Smith, and Daniel McGinnis, decided to boat to the island for a day of fun. When they arrived, they noticed a strange, circular depression on the beach. So, they started digging to discover what could have caused the ground to sink down.
For the rest of their lives, the trio never revealed why, but something made them immediately stop digging after just a few feet. According to local legend, something scared the young men off.
