Surf music hit an absolute peak in the 1960s. Back then, you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the sounds of surf music, most often led by a fast-picked guitar. And of all the instrumental surf hits, “Wipe Out” has to be one of the biggest. The 1963 tune by the Surfaris shot up to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Even if you don’t know the song by name, you almost certainly know its opening: laughter and an iconic drum solo.

While the Surfaris never charted another hit, “Wipe Out” remains a legendary surf rock song, one everyone from the Muppets to the Beach Boys has covered.
