Do you know what 99 Luftballons is about? Because most people don’t! The German song, one of the only non-Spanish foreign language hits in the history of the United States, first hit the airwaves in 1983. Despite most people not understanding the lyrics, which talk about nuclear war, Americans love the song, and it topped the charts. Funnily enough, when Nena released an English version the following year, it failed to chart. People preferred the German version!
As you probably already know, Nena never had another hit in the United States. However, that has not stopped the group from becoming one of the most popular in its home country of Germany.
