Usually, the bigger the royal title, the bigger the hat. During formal, black tie events, the Queen and all princesses must wear hats. The Queen has a large variety of hats: she likes everything from the small and formal above to large, colorful hats. Princess Diana, meanwhile, opted for angular wide brim hats. Middleton, on the other hand, chooses more minimalist fascinators. As for Philip’s hat above, well, that’s better left alone…
Meghan Markle has quickly embraced the royal family trademark and wears eccentric, stylish hats as well. Most importantly, Markle and Middleton’s hats must never be larger or more impressive than the Queen’s. So, it is actually more than just personal taste at play. Similarly, at even more formal white-tie events, Meghan and Kate must wear a smaller tiara.
