Looking closely at some moon landing pictures, you might notice that some objects are well let, even when in dark shadows. Many skeptics believe that if the only light source were the sun, this would not be the case. Instead, they argue that these images are the result of multiple Hollywood lights just “off-screen”!
Meanwhile, Rick Fienberg, an astronomer and the press officer for the American Astronomical Society, says there’s a much simpler explanation: the moon reflects the sun’s light! “The sunlight is being scattered or reflected off the ground every which way, and some of it—a small fraction but enough to be able to see—scatters into the shadows,” Fienberg explained.
