“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The 300 million people watching the moon landing live on television all heard Neil Armstrong misspeak. After all, it should have been “one small step for [a] man.” He simply mixed up his words, quite understandable for the first man on the moon – or did he?
Until his passing in 2012, Armstrong maintained he did not misspeak! “It’s just that people didn’t hear [the ‘a’],” the astronaut explained years later. Thankfully, in 2006, Armstrong was vindicated when programmer Peter Shann Ford did a deep analysis of the moon landing audio and discovered a small audio bump before “man.” It was the missing “a”!
