The United States started planning to send a man to the moon amidst a space race with Russia. During the Cold War, Russia bested America by launching the first satellite into orbit, Sputnik, in 1957. The Soviets then achieved another space race victory in 1961 by getting Yuri Gagarin into space.
So, the United States focused on one of the last goals left: putting a man on the moon. At the time, newly formed NASA knew that the Apollo missions would be challenging. However, they could never have known just how difficult and dangerous they truly would be. But they would soon find out!
