In 2103, Tommy Jonson’s “Alcohol and Jake Blue” became one of the most valuable vinyl records in history. You see, this record by the legendary Delta bluesman Johnson fetched the highest price ever paid for a 78 on eBay. Believe it or not, the winning bid came in at a whopping $37,100!
The seller, a South Carolina collector, had purchased the record years earlier at an estate sale. At the time, he had no idea that the “Alcohol and Jake Blue” record was extremely rare. On a whim, he decided to put it on eBay, only to witness the bids skyrocket immediately. John Tefteller, a well-known blues collector, ultimately won the auction, paying the $37,100 price tag. Not only that, but he also owns the only other copy of the single known to exist!
