Maria Holmes, a single mother from Shallotte, North Carolina, didn’t enjoy a privileged life. In fact, she struggled to make ends meet as a mother of four. As such, Holmes ended up working multiple jobs at once, trying to provide the essentials to her small children. Still, it wasn’t enough. Soon, the bills started piling up, and her income could barely get them through everyday life.

In fact, the chances to win the lottery are over 1 in 300 million! So, she later said, she didn’t even feel hopeful.
