Desperate for answers, Holmes tried to obtain them by turning to her faith. Just like many individuals who turn to their faith for comfort and support, the only stability Holmes had in her life was the church. There, she developed a meaningful relationship with her pastor, Kevin Matthews, pictured above.
Holmes felt incredibly inspired by Matthews’s passionate speeches about the importance of faith and belief. Matthews, meanwhile, had become a well-known figure among the residents of Shallotte, who constantly referred to himself as a “warrior of Christ.” What’s more, not only was he the mouthpiece for his community, but he also developed a close bond to those who attended his church every Sunday, like Marie Holmes.
