Like many other strictly religious communities, the Amish don’t believe in taking preventive measures to avoid pregnancy. So, it’ll come as no surprise that the average Amish family has seven children, according to the U.S. Census statistics. And shopping for such a large family certainly adds up! Just imagine how much grocery shopping they would have to do to support seven children.

So, unsurprisingly, many Amish parents opt to buy their items in bulk. What’s more, in Amish towns, many of the stores tend to sell things like flour, sugar, and oats in vast quantities. Fortunately, they have plenty of space in these rural Amish towns, and storing their massive grocery haul is not a problem. “They never buy retail unless it’s something like toilet paper,” says Craker.
