Wally Backman – Poor Spending Habits

Kathleen Malone-Van Dyke

Wally Backman was a professional baseball player throughout the 1980s. He debuted in the MLB back in 1980 playing for the New York Mets. During his time in the MLB, Backman played for the New York Mets, Minnesota Twins, Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, and Seattle Mariners. In 1993, Blackman decided to retired, after spending 23 years on the field.

Backman was last under contract in 1992, with a 1-year package with $700,000. From 1988 to 1992, Backman earned $3.3 million in career earnings. However, that wasn’t enough cash to continue having a lavish lifestyle. In 2003, Backman had gone completely broke and filed for bankruptcy. He was let go from his manager position with the Arizona Diamondbacks shortly after.
