Clinton Portis – Poor Spending Habits
In case you forgot, Clinton Portis signed an eight-year, $50.5 million contract with the former Washington Redskins back in 2004, the highest-paid NFL player at the time. Portis had a pretty great start to a career and everything went rather swimmingly for most of his time in the league. However, struggles were looming around the corner when he least expected it.
Portis’ financial advisors didn’t do the best job keeping his assets in order, and by 2015, Portis had no choice but to declare bankruptcy. In 2017, the former footballer was reportedly living in a low-rent two-bedroom apartment in Northern Virginia. Portis later reflected on his dealings with his financial advisors saying, “The complication begins because you don’t understand it. You don’t know what they’re saying, but you just get involved.”
