Eddie Edwards – Poor Spending Habits and Legal Fees

The Telegraph

Former Olympic ski-jumper Eddie Edwards, aka Eddie the Eagle, made quite a name for himself by not skiing or jumping very well at the Winter Olympics in Calgary in 1988. Edwards became the first competitor to represent Great Britain since 1928 when he finished last in both 70m and 90m jumps. However, instead of being embarrassed by his performances, he saw the opportunity to become a celebrity!

Fame brought with it not just fortune, but an entire entourage of managers, flunkies, and would-be wives. Before long, the suitors came and went, and so did the money. Edwards’ appearance fees were stashed in a trust fund set up to protect his amateur status. Then, in 1991, when the trust went bust, he declared bankruptcy and sued the trustees for mismanagement. Eventually, he won a settlement and pocketed $100,000!
