Darren McCarty – Bad Investments

Former ice hockey forward Darren McCarty is best known for his years playing with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League. Taking on the role of the Red Wings enforcer for most of his career, McCarty has been known more for his fists than his scoring ability. Like so many athletes, McCarty filed for bankruptcy after listing over $6 million in debts.
McCarty claimed that his business partner looted the company. One court filing states that McCarty had a 20% stake in a company with one real asset: a truck stop. Apparently, his business partner took out a $3 million loan on that one asset, then forged McCarty’s signature for a $650,000 salary pull.
