Denny McLain – Gambling Debts
McLain was an ace for the Detroit Tigers throughout the 1960s, amassing a total of 31 wins in 1968. However, by 1970, McLain would hit a wall. That year, McLain was exposed for his massive debts incurred from gambling and mob ties. Even though McLain’s annual income was close to $200,000, McLain had entrusted it all with a lawyer, who later fled to Japan.
Without his baseball income, McLain’s financial troubles forced him to file for bankruptcy. Claiming that all of his problems were due to poor financial decisions, his petition listed debts of $449,069 and assets of only $413. Today, McLain tries to make his living through public appearances and book sales. His two books are title, Nobody’s Perfect and I Told You I Wasn’t Perfect.
