Mortal Engines (2018), Hugo Weaving – $175 Million Lost

Even though the Peter Jackson produced Mortal Engines came out last year and starred the likes of Hugo Weaving, most have already forgotten it. Universal Pictures wanted Mortal Engines to kick-off a massive cinematic universe. As such, they spent $150 million on production and launched an extensive marketing campaign. Unfortunately, the film flopped before anyone pitched any ideas for a sequel.
Mortal Engines, based on the fantasy novel of the same name, is set in the distant future where entire cities are on wheels, moving around the world and preying on each other. Cool premise, right? Well, critics agreed! Which made it sting even more when the film was bland and eye-rollingly unbelievable. Audiences listened and stayed away, costing Universal $175 million when all was said and done.
