The Most Famous Restaurant Chains That Failed (For Good Reasons!)
Ever wonder why famous failed restaurant chains like Howard Johnson’s and D’Lites went under? Find out here!
10. Schrafft’s
Over its lifetime, Schrafft’s came a long way. It started as a simple candy store in Boston back in 1898. From there, the store slowly grew into a major candy company, and then a full-fledged restaurant chain! In fact, at the time, Schrafft’s was one of the few restaurants chains to allow unescorted women inside!
By 1937, there were over 43 Schrafft’s locations on the East Coast, mainly in the cities of New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. Meanwhile, the company’s giant neon sign became a landmark in the city of Boston. Unfortunately, when the candy company went under, they sold the restaurants to Pet, Inc., a dairy company, which failed to run them properly. The last Schrafft’s location closed in the 1980s.
