The Most Famous Restaurant Chains That Failed (For Good Reasons!)
Ever wonder why famous failed restaurant chains like Howard Johnson’s and D’Lites went under? Find out here!
15. Sambo’s
It’s hard to imagine a company like Sambo’s existing. The pancake house opened back in 1957 and quickly grew on the West Coast. In fact, they had so much success that by the late 1970s, there were more than 1,100 Sambo’s open. However, their luck didn’t last much longer. You see, many had an issue with the company’s name…
For those of you who don’t know, the name “Sambo” is a derogatory term for black persons. Even though the owners claimed that the name was a derivative of their names combined, people just weren’t buying it, nor their pancakes. While the business attempted to rebrand themselves, they eventually closed down. However, one Sambo’s still operates today in Santa Barbara, California.
