16. Henry’s Hamburgers
In the ’50s, Bresler’s Ice Cream decided they wanted to get into the fast food restaurant chain business. So, they Henry’s Hamburgers, using their own ice cream as the base for their malts and shakes. As with many failed restaurant chains, the company closely modeled Henry’s Hamburgers after McDonald’s, as they were the most significant competition at the time.
The fast food chain became a massive hit throughout the ‘60s. However, they started to run out of luck in the 1970s. First, the company struggled to keep up with competitors by not installing drive-thrus. Then, investigators revealed that many of Henry’s Hamburgers had been using horse meat for their burgers! Suffice to say, that was the final nail in the coffin. However, there’s still one location still operating in Benton Harbor, MI.
