The Most Famous Restaurant Chains That Failed (For Good Reasons!)
Ever wonder why famous failed restaurant chains like Howard Johnson’s and D’Lites went under? Find out here!
24. Doggie Diner
If you grew up in San Francisco, you likely remember Doggie Diner and its trademark smiling dachshund mascot, dressed in a chef’s hat and bow tie. For those outside California, Doggie Diner was a small, fast food chain in Oakland and San Francisco that specialized in fast food staples, like hot dogs and hamburgers.
Al Ross founded the company back in 1948, and it quickly expanded throughout the metropolitan area. While the chain of restaurants closed in 1986, the Doggie mascot remained a pop culture icon in the area for several years. One of the old fiberglass Doggies heads remained in a public space, becoming a tourist attraction. Later on, in 2006, the head even became an official San Francisco landmark!
