The Most Famous Restaurant Chains That Failed (For Good Reasons!)
Ever wonder why famous failed restaurant chains like Howard Johnson’s and D’Lites went under? Find out here!
26. House of Pies
The first House of Pies restaurant opened back in 1965. As you might imagine, the House of Pies offered just about any kind of pie you could desire, something no other restaurant chain at the time offered. However, it did not take long for the trend to catch on. A year later, Marie Callender and her husband started expanding their now-famous eatery, Marie Callender’s.
By the time Marie Callender’s sold to Marriot and truly started to expand, House of Pies could no longer compete. By 1989, almost all of the locations closed down. House of Pies’ owner, Al Lapin Jr., would go on to found another famous restaurant: the International House of Pancakes. Today, if you find yourself looking for a great slice of pie, there are two remaining House of Pies. One lies in Huston, the other in Los Angeles.
