The Most Famous Restaurant Chains That Failed (For Good Reasons!)
Ever wonder why famous failed restaurant chains like Howard Johnson’s and D’Lites went under? Find out here!
30. Ameche’s Drive-In
Ameche’s Drive-In was once the most popular restaurant chain in the Baltimore area. Founded by famous NFL football player Alan Ameche, the company opened with five drive-ins in 1960. To draw people in, the brand’s mascot, a little football player, adorned all their restaurants across the city.
However, Ameche’s Drive-In quickly became more famous for its Powerhouse Burgers, which customers often described as “a banquet of on a bun.” Customers also loved the “Cheerleader” sandwiches (hot ham and Swiss cheese with mustard). Today, sadly, the chain is no longer in operation, though many in the Baltimore area still have fond memories of Ameche’s.
